It wasn’t desperately early when I awoke. I took a guess and said eight or so.

I guess I needed the sleep. But what I really need is a watch. I should buy one when I get back to the fort.

Death lay next to me, still snuggled close, though at some point she’d lost her dress and was lying next to me in just her underwear. She clutched my hand to her chest, and it was so adorable that I wouldn’t have moved if the bed was on fire.

She really is cute, especially when she’s sleeping. I guess I can see why the me I’ve forgotten would like her.

I brushed her hair out of her face and let her rest.

Death stirred about half an hour later and started sniffing the air. “Mmm, breakfast,” she said and sat up.

“Can you eat?” I asked as I scooted back to lean against the headboard.

“I can, though it does nothing for me other than taste good. One of the many advantages I have over the gods.”

“Well, let’s go before it gets cold,” I said as I hopped out of bed and threw on some clothes.

Death was going to walk out topless, but I grabbed a spare shirt from the dresser. It was Omar’s and was a size too big for her and said, Silence is golden, but duct tape is silver across it, but it would do.

Before we left, I realized that this would be the first time that Finn and Adeline would be meeting Death, and I still hadn’t forgotten the way they’d made me the butt of their jokes the other day. A slightly devious grin broke over my face as I turned back to Death.

She giggled as she took in my face. “You’ve got that wicked smirk that you always have when you’ve got something up your sleeve. Do tell.”

I leaned over and whispered in her ear before I opened the bedroom door, and we walked out.

The first thing I noticed was that the girl from yesterday was gone. Finn was in the kitchen with Adeline, and they were both only wearing T-shirts and underwear.

Fashion of the day, it seems.

“Where’d the girl go?” I asked, yawning.

Finn shrugged, focused on his cooking. “She was gone when we got up, took some supplies from the pantry.” He grumbled. “And my pistol.”

“Oh well, the food was no issue, but I’m sorry about your gun.”

“Eh, I’ll grab another one back at base. They have plenty to spare, and we did complete the quest,” he said and turned. “Hey, Kill. You like spicy sausage─“

Finn stopped speaking and stared behind me as he pursed his lips. He blinked three times in rapid succession and turned back to me.

I tried to keep my face still, even though I was laughing inside.

“Um, Kill. Who’s your friend?” he asked.

Adeline jerked up and joined in on the conversation. She stared at Death and gave her a once over. “Where the hell did she come from?”

I laughed. “Sorry, guys, I guess I should introduce her.
