27. The Villain I’ve Become

It was still bugging him. Having his tooth returned. Jay prowled around his cell like a beast. All the material comforts destroyed by the gajillion volts that had passed through him– twice– repaired itself via sophisticated magic.

The ash on the floor returned to its cushioned form. The plants came back to life. Yeah, these aliens had it fancy. No Systems on them, though. Just purely advanced magic. They had powers comparable to the mid to high ranks.

They would’ve conquered Earth and enslaved all of its people if it wasn’t for the Pre-Apocalypse and YoAnna. Then again, they wouldn’t have known about Earth until YoAnna’s arrival as queen of the universe.

Jay stopped to look out the extra thick window. It was a fake. He was contained inside the heart of the prison. It had multiple walls all around him. The visuals from the window of space came from a recording device. It was still an impressive sight with his own eyes.

“Strange,” Jay said. “I’m far from home, going from one wild adventure to the next, but I’m a little hung up on my tooth.”

He could remember their times in the deep dark place with Sushi now. Everything Jay and Kleo had needed from down there was gained. They wouldn’t get to meet Sushi again unless they purposefully bring him and the other eldritch monkeys out of the abyss. But they wouldn’t do that unless they could secure their safety from the rest of the Multiverse and convince the eldritch monkeys that Jay was the boss.

How many promises did Jay have to fulfill? Bondye waited for him in the 6th Hell Circle. His skellies still needed reviving– the cores were stored away safely in a vault. He should bring Enkidu back to the other immortals– he was alive, but he was pretty good at hiding. Jay’s legendary power would find Enkidu for sure once he was back on Earth.

But he was delaying action right now because he was bothered by more than the tooth. He was bothered by what it took to get to this point. All the ways the System Apocalypse had become worse had him at the center.

And he’d finally gotten the confirmation of being one of the greatest evils of the Multiverse. He’d kept running full steam ahead, ignoring the stacking problems. Putting his aims on defeating whatever stood in his way.

Commander Steele and his assassins?

That felt like a blast from the past. Gosh, Jay almost wanted to find the old man’s soul and sit with him. Have a conversation. Why? Maybe a part of Jay wanted to show the old man what he’d missed out on.

Jay was also curious to see what Commander Steele would say about how far the Champions had gone. He was right about so much except for how he’d helped propel the difficulties the entire world suffered.

Doug, Dad, the gangsters of Junkside. That was an entire side quest that derailed so hard Jay wondered if they should’ve handled things better.
