It waited until the lights were out and everyone had fallen back to sleep. It left the first floor and took the stairs to the second. The only proof of its presence was the chill in the air. Fresh-cut flowers displayed in an alcove on the landing took on a sheen of frost as it passed by. Stopping at the head of the stairs, it studied the length of the darkened hallway. Someone new was here, in the house tonight. Someone strong. It passed down the hallway to investigate.

Avery snuggled close against Dyson’s broad back. Dyson felt the reporter’s arm slip around his naked body, pulling him tight. The sweat and heat brought on by their proximity was a fair trade for the pleasure of having him so close.

The reporter kissed his back and he felt the scruff of the man’s auburn beard tickle his neck and shoulders. Dyson sighed and pressed into the embrace. He felt the other man’s need, firm and resolute, tight against the cheeks of his ass. He ground against it and Avery moaned. A tongue joined the kisses and glided across Dyson’s neck. A gentle hand caressed the firm muscles of his stomach before sliding lower.

He quivered as the man’s tongue went to work against the flesh of his ear. He turned in the embrace to find the reporter’s waiting lips. Tongues explored. Dyson reached down between Avery’s legs and fondled the hot swelling he found there. Avery matched his rhythm stroke for stroke as the two men luxuriated in their kiss.

When their lips finally parted, Dyson sighed and chuckled. “This is nice.”

“Yes, it is,” a voice replied. Only it wasn’t Avery’s voice. It was quieter, more reserved. A voice Dyson hadn’t heard in some time.

He opened his eyes. A face stared back at him, one without tousled auburn hair or a roman nose taking up the center of his face. A dark-haired boy, one used to wearing brown robes and spectacles, had taken Avery’s place. Only the boy was dead—a few years now. The proof was there, before Dyson’s eyes. The boy’s skin was pale and his flesh flaking away. His eyes were glassy and dull. The young man smiled that quiet smile of his, exposing rotted teeth. He leaned in for another kiss.
