Aerosols
Nowadays, you can get almost any kind of finishing material in an aerosol can. You might want to consider using a clear aerosol finish on the legs of a project. It’ll speed that process up considerably, but you don’t want to use it on an entire piece or on a tabletop. Believe me, these products were not designed for that use. Aside from the high cost, with aerosol paint it’s nearly impossible to get a nice even finish on a large flat surface.
Airbrushes
Although I’m not an advocate of fancy gadgets, an airbrush is a worthwhile investment. It’s like a miniature spray-painting outfit but uses a little ballpoint pen–sized sprayer instead of a big spray gun. An air brush is perfect for small projects such as frames, legs, pottery, and lamp bases; it’s also handy for staining difficult areas.
Airbrushes themselves are pretty cheap, but the compressor that furnishes the air can be quite expensive. Fortunately, you don’t need to buy a compressor. Instead, purchase cans of propellant to attach to the little airhose. Even if you do decide to buy a compressor, the total package will cost you considerably less than a “real” spray outfit and will quickly pay for itself in time savings.
Air from a Spare. All right, I’m feeling guilty about advising you to spend money on an airbrush — a genuinely nice-to-have tool — so I’m going to tell you how to save a little bit on the air. I was ashamed to mention it before, but those cans of propellant are pretty expensive! Instead of buying a compressor or propellant, go to a junkyard and get an old tire mounted on a wheel. It’ll cost less than a can of “air,” and with an adapter that you can get for the airbrush, it will furnish all the pressure you need. You can refill the tire again and again.
