The Career Tree is a refreshing alternative to hundreds of pathways, ladders, flow charts, and other complex metaphors and diagrams that have made education challenging for the layperson to understand. It was born from my work with educators and employers to address our national branch creak caused by the expanding skills gap, rising college costs, and lack of performance on the part of the younger generations—everything we have been discussing in this book up to this point. The Tree is an illustration that distills all of the strategies, generational information, and knowledge into a simple solution for students at any level of education and in any type of school to create their own pathway to a successful life and career.
There may be many different ideas and solutions that meet these pressing needs, but the Career Tree is the culmination of all my research, concepts, and strategies on how to impact young people nationwide. I share this not to impress you but to impress upon you that connecting the dots and taking positive action can produce impressive results with young people. You may have formulated your own concepts based on what has already been discussed—that’s great; take action on your ideas to move young people to greater performance. Look beyond the following Career Tree example to the underpinning concept of why it works and why it moves young people to action and greater performance.

It can also be adapted to the needs of employers by motivating employees to envision—and start achieving—the career possibilities and levels open to them within the company.
Besides its application in the workplace, the Career Tree is designed to be used in any classroom and any area of study. It has been used in academic classrooms as well as career and technical education programs and training centers to start and foster an ongoing dialogue with students and trainees about what careers and occupations are right for them based on their own unique interests, talents, and abilities. They research careers and occupations available in the field of their technical program that look appealing and then the lifestyle associated with that career or occupation. As they do this, their Awareness Gap is bridged, bringing them that much nearer to discovering their own Light at the End of the Tunnel. When they discover the position that hits their personal ideal intersection of career and lifestyle, they write their name and career choice on a Career Leaf label and place it on a full-color, customized, interactive Career Tree wall graphic displayed in their classroom. The moment they affix their Career Leaf to the Tree, it becomes a goal and aspiration. As with the
