Conclusion

Given the imperial legacy of Royce’s work and his dispositions toward Blacks, it should be apparent even to the most casual observers that Royce’s philosophy is fraught with racist colonialism. It is here that the opening quote by Sydney Olivier really demonstrates the problem of Royce’s thought, because instead of merely being guided by colonial principles, Royce urges white Americans through provincialism to become better colonizers—an idea of such consequence that it shall remain an obstacle to future anti-racist readings of Josiah Royce’s work. Some readers may still be unconvinced by the case made by this chapter. I ask the reader to endure a little longer and explore the parallels between Royce’s 1900 speech at Aberdeen University and his 1902 publication entitled “Provincialism.” I ask the reader to pause for a moment and consider the consequence of whites being the dominant racial class and benefactors of Anglo-Saxon civilization, upon the so-called strangers of America—the Blacks, Indigenous, Asians, among others. What power is gifted to the white population under such an arrangement? What would it mean to be Black (a stranger), or an “alien race,” as Royce phrases it, in this America? Because Royce’s thought is so dedicated to the assimilation and the eradication of all cultural and racial differences, would life as an African American, Asian American, or Native American, even be possible? In chapter 3, I conclude that these lived realities are not only impossible but condemnable, from Royce’s point of view, because their self-determined activity would in fact threaten the stability of the country and risk sectionalism much like the great war of the nineteenth century.
