Chapter 33 - Resignation Letter

“You’re here early,” Janice noted as she entered Kat’s office.

“Yes, I’m disturbed by Dr. Williams’s laptop. It was wiped clean. No one seems to know why she disappeared or where she went. I think something happened to her.”

“She was a weird little duck,” Janice noted.

“In what way?”

“She was secretive for a professor. No one knew much about her, and she was here over five years. She was very private about her personal life.”

“How close was she with Dr. Trent?” Kat asked.

Janice blushed and looked away. “They were good friends.”

“Were they close friends?”

“I can’t say,” Janice side stepped the question. “I heard rumors but have no facts to back them up.”

“What kind of rumors?”

“I’d rather not repeat idle gossip,” Janice insisted.

“I’m going to file a missing person’s report with the police,” Kat blurted. “I’d like to know where she is.”

“I wouldn’t do that,” Janice argued. “The police snooping around the campus might rake up muck we don’t want exposed.”

“Such as?” Kat raised her brows.

“I think Dr. Williams and Dr. Trent were lovers.” Janice confided.

Kat didn’t ask Janice if her husband had a Wednesday meeting with Darcas every week. The woman was getting agitated and threatened to burst into tears any moment.

“Is everything arranged for the concert next week?” Kat asked.

“Yes ma’am,” Janice smirked. “I’ve made all the arrangements. Hall reserved, up-to-date information on the website, tickets sold, program printed, and reception arranged. You should get lots of kudos for your students’ performance and my hard work.”

“Janice it is obvious to me that you think you can do my job better than I can. I’ve looked at your employee file. You are only a dissertation away from having your doctorate. Why don’t you finish it?

“It is a wife’s place to support her husband,” Janice sighed. “Nicholas says it is more important for both of us to work toward his success than to go in separate directions.”

“The subservient wife?” Kat huffed.

“My personal life is really none of your business Dr. Lace.”

“You are right. I stepped over the line,” Kat apologized. “I’m sorry.”

“Forget it, but I wouldn’t file a missing person report on Dr. Williams, if I were you,” Janice reiterated.

After Kat’s fifth student, her stomach demanded food. Janice had gone to lunch so Kat locked her office and the outer office. She encountered Heather in front of the fine arts building. “I’m going to get lunch,” Kat said. “Care to join me.”

“I’m surprised you are still speaking to me after my shameful behavior,” Heather scoffed.

“That is in the past,” Kat said. “We’re friends and colleagues. It was just a misunderstanding and I’d love your company over lunch.”

“Is Bulldog’s okay?” Heather asked. “I must drop some flyers by to encourage people to attend our concert.”

“Of course, I’m glad we are doing a joint concert,” Kat said. “I’ve noticed that the students who are taking your classes are far more talented and well versed in vocal performance. You manage to get them over their stage fright.”

“I find good singers become great singers when we instill confidence in them and help them overcome their nerves.
