Anna sighed and sank down onto the hard chair gratefully. She’d spent the afternoon helping Zeke in the kitchen, and she felt like death warmed over. On Fridays, he’d always prepared a simple meal of stew and biscuits for the miners knowing they rarely had any kind of home-cooked meal. She’d foolishly asked if she could help, and her day of torture had begun. She’d peeled enough potatoes, carrots, and onions to last her a lifetime. She did have to admit the finished product had smelled mouthwatering. Unfortunately, she’d been too tired to sample her efforts.

The worst had been his attempt to teach her to make biscuits. A soak in their iron tub would be the only way she’d ever feel clean again. She’d be willing to bet she had flour in unmentionable places. She’d spent the last hour helping Beau clean up the kitchen by washing and drying all the dishes. The only good thing about the day had been the afternoon had passed quickly. All that work had taken her mind off their early morning raid on the mill.

“You doing okay, honey?”

She looked up into Beau’s chocolate-brown eyes and smiled. “Yeah, I’m great. A little tired maybe, but nothing too serious.”

“Okay, I’m glad we didn’t wear you out.” He squatted down beside her chair. “I’m gonna be playing cards at that table near the door while Zeke tends bar. That’s how we keep close tabs on the place.” He grabbed her chin and raised her gaze to his. “You stay here where Zeke can keep an eye on you. It’s not safe for you to be wandering off by yourself.”

Anna smiled and saluted him with one hand. “Aye, aye, captain.” At his puzzled look, she grinned. “I won’t move out of his sight, Beau. I’m too tired to wander off. If he gets really busy, I might offer to help behind the bar, but other than that, I’ll stay here and keep warming this chair.”

He shook his head and kissed her cheek. “Sometimes I feel like you speak a foreign language. I’ll keep my eye on you, too. If anybody bothers you, just yell out and we’ll come a running.”

She giggled and looked back toward the bar. Zeke was watching and he motioned her over. “What can I do for you, big guy?”

He pointed to a stool behind the bar. “Thought you might like to keep me company for a while instead of sitting there all by yourself.”

Anna smiled and plopped down on the wooden seat. She started to ask him for something to drink and saw Bart Canders walk through the door. He made a beeline for the bar.

“Gimme the finest rotgut whisky you got,” he demanded, swallowing hard. His pale skin glimmered with perspiration. There was a steady tic in his cheek as his eyes met hers and then cut away swiftly. His fists clenched and unclenched as he waited for Zeke to give him his drink. As she watched, he raised the whisky jug to his lips, his throat rippling as he took a long swallow.
