Chapter Seventeen

“Are you sure you know where we’re going?” Anna asked. She pulled into the empty parking lot of a run-down shopping center at Mack’s instructions and chose a parking spot in the corner, near the street.

Mack glanced at her, but didn’t say anything. He’d been lost inside his own mind since they left Anna’s, and she was dying to know what he was thinking.

After she shut off the engine, they all piled out of the car. As much as Anna didn’t want her mother there, she was also secretly relieved to have her. Eden, too. She briefly wondered how Rourk and Gavin were doing, but pushed the thought to the side. She had to worry about finding the girl on her end. The elves were entering the underground at another location. Hopefully, one of their two groups would get lucky.

A couple minutes later, two cars rolled into the lot and took spaces on either side of Anna’s. She had to stifle a laugh when she saw the huge bouncer from the bar—the one that checked her ID—get out of one of the vehicles. He was a giant next to the small sedan. She wasn’t really surprised to find out that he was also a guardian.

The second person was a female. She was small compared to the others. Her straight, black hair was cut in an asymmetrical bob. She looked Asian, but her eyes were a startling pale yellow, like a cat. It was a striking contrast.

Mack nodded to the two newcomers. “This is Conrad and Ava.”

Both gave tight smiles, but neither spoke. The woman reached out, and Mack handed her the blueprints. She scanned over them for a few moments, then thrust them back into Mack’s chest.

“This way,” Ava said as she shifted her small black backpack and took off down the side street.

Anna exchanged an amused look with her mother, and the rest of them followed.

The street was lined with stores—obviously dark and closed at two am. The night sky was overcast, and the only light was a dim, orange street lamp every block or so. They walked in silence until they came to a large grate on the sidewalk.

Mack crouched and pried it off like it was aluminum foil. Anna stared at him, aghast, and he moved up a few ranks in her eyes.

Ava stepped forward and shone her flashlight down into the cavernous hole. The woman stood up, nodded at Mack, and then leapt into the hole. Anna stared into the black hole, her heart in her throat. How far was the drop?

“She’s a show-off,” Mack murmured, his eyes twinkling.

Anna was too nervous to laugh.

Conrad let his bag fall from his shoulder and pulled out a thick rope, handing it to Mack.

Mack wrapped one end of the rope tightly around his forearm, and dropped the other down into the tunnel. A few seconds later, the rope jerked.

Anna figured it was a signal from Ava. After seeing Mack remove the grate, she didn’t question if he had the strength to hold their weight on the rope.
