‘You’re far too young to understand,’ she was told. ‘Wait until you grow up.’

‘Fynn,’ she asked, ‘do everybody have to grow up before they know Mister God?’

‘Don’t suppose it works like that,’ I murmured.

‘Then how does it work, Fynn? How then?’

‘Well,’ I replied hesitantly, ‘I guess the Vicar meant understand Mister God, not know Mister God.’

‘Oh.’

‘Sometimes, Tich, I think it’s a whole lot easier for kids to know Mister God than it is for grown ups.’

‘Why, Fynn?’ she persisted. ‘Why?’

I didn’t quite know the answer to that one, so I just had to make it up.

‘Well,’ I began, ‘I reckon grown ups have often got so many problems of their own that they just haven’t got time to … er … er …’

‘Play?’ she suggested. ‘Play with Mister God. Eh? Play?’

‘Something like that,’ I said.

‘Um. Grown-up people make church so, well, serious that they never have time to play, do they, Fynn?’

‘I guess you’re just about right on that one, luv,’ I replied.

‘Too busy trying to earn enough money to pay the bills I guess.’

Anna didn’t really go much on the idea that people had no time to play with Mister God. So far as she could understand the Bible and all the church services she had attended, it was often more frightening than joyful and she lost no opportunity in saying so.

‘Fynn,’ she said, ‘is that why Mister John don’t like Mister God?’

‘Well,’ I replied uncertainly, ‘I don’t think Mister John doesn’t like Mister God. It’s just, well …’ As usual I was getting into very hot water and I just didn’t know how to get out of the mess I was getting into. With her usual persistence, she wasn’t going to let me off the hook. These kind of questions so often left me stunned. I never quite knew which way to turn. I tried to wriggle out of them, but she never allowed me to. My problem was always how to try to explain things to her without destroying her own happiness in Mister God. I didn’t realize for a long, long time that nothing that I, or for that matter, anybody else, could say could possibly destroy … it wasn’t love, it wasn’t awe, it was simply happiness. She just saw God as a being of pure fun. She talked to Mister God in the same way that she talked to me or her dear friend Bombom. She saw Mister God not in the way most people did, but simply as her best friend; the kind of friend you could just chatter with and tell a funny story to. You could show him things. Well, you could simply have a good old giggle with him. She never could understand why it was you had to creep about on tiptoes or that sort of thing when you went into church. It just wasn’t her. She could well understand that you would have to do that sort of thing with very important people like Kings and Queens, but
