CHAPTER

TEN

GRANT

“Mr. Grant?” James spoke into the phone. “Ms. Jaycee ran into the bathroom. She’s crying awful hard. I’m worried about her.”

“Shit. Is my mom still there?”

“I believe she is.”

“Please go find her. Give her the phone. Christ—thank god you were there. Are you okay? Did you see the doctor? Obviously, I’ll pay any expenses.”

“It wouldn’t be necessary. You provide a very generous health plan, but I’m fine. Carl and some of his men helped.”

I waited as he went to find my mom then I heard, “Grant?”

“Mom, what the hell happened?”

“Your father went off the deep end. He started saying some not-nice things to James when I had to use the restroom. When I got back he was out of his mind—Grant, I never heard your father talk like that before. The things he said to her were vile. I meant to calm things down, but when he threatened her, I couldn’t.”

“He threatened her?”

“Yes. Her and the baby. I called the police on him. He told her that if she didn’t leave you alone, that if she got on that plane, he’d make sure it was the last trip she ever took or something. Why? How can a man turn into someone you don’t recognize?”

“He’s never liked Jaycee, Mom.”

“I know. His hostility has steadily gotten worse. Something is really not right with him. He scares me. I said he turned into someone I no longer recognized. It didn’t happen overnight. When he wanted to come with me tonight, I thought, maybe just maybe… I’m so stupid. I’m sorry, Grant. I didn’t protect Jaycee better.”

“Mom, it’s not your fault.”

“I’m filing for divorce. I refuse to live the rest of my life—” She sucked in a sharp breath. I’ll take you, Jaycee, and Nugget a hundred times over him.”

“You can stay at the house. Dad will be pissed when he gets out. I’m calling a security company once I get off the phone with you. Mom—make sure that Jaycee gets on that plane. Please.”

“She’ll be on it.”

“Give the phone to James.” Mom handed the phone back to him.

“Mr. Grant?”

“I’m calling a security firm I know. While I’m gone, they’ll go through you to get it set up. I won’t have Jaycee in danger.”

“Yes. I’m all over it.”

How unhinged did a man have to be to make threats against another person let alone his own son’s woman and baby? I loved Jaycee and I wanted to be a father. I wanted it more than I ever thought I would. It wasn’t like I’d left him unawares of the situation. He and my mother both knew how much I wanted Nugget from the first phone call I’d made to inform them that I was going to be a father. I’d knocked up Jaycee Lloyd and I was fucking ecstatic about it.

As soon as I hung up with James, I called my teammate Jones. He’d run into some trouble with a stalker who threatened his wife and kids a couple of years back. Jones hired a highly sought-after security firm that he still worked with today.
