Chapter 21: Readying the House
Dan found it both strange and enjoyable to hear children laughing in the house. Above him, Eli and Lucille played and made Dan wonder what it was they could be playing. Not only were they dead, but they came from separate time periods.
How do they connect, other than being dead? Or does it really matter when youâre a kid?
He set the kettle to boil before he took a seat at the kitchen table. A twinge of pain shot through his shoulders, and he rolled his eyes. Need to remember to take some Tylenol before I go to sleep tonight.
He looked out the window over the kitchen sink at the night sky. Stars shined brightly, a clear sign of the cold air beyond the houseâs walls. Itâs been a good day. One of the better ones lately. And the stars look nice. This is a great way to end a Friday. Hereâs hoping Saturday will be even better.
The kettle whistled, and he stood, crossing the room slowly. His body was tightening, a sure sign that he had done more than he should have. As he poured the boiling water into the teapot, Dan shook his head. No choice in the matter, he thought, taking some herbal tea out of the cabinet and adding the bags to the pot. From the drawer near him, he withdrew a soft blue tea cozy and settled it over the pot.
He heard Eli let out a cheerful cry, and Lucille squealed with pleasure a moment later. Something thudded to the floor, and the house shook. For a moment, Dan thought he was home again when Aaron and Emily were still young.
The memory shook him and drove him to his seat. A lump formed in his throat, and he swallowed it with difficulty. His memories of his son and daughter at that age were vague. He had been too angry for too long. Pleasant recollections of their toddler years were few and far between. All he could remember, at times, were the arguments with Jess.
Why did we even get married? He closed his eyes and sighed.
His thoughts traveled, and he wondered if other people who had divorced ever asked themselves that question. Maybe if I had friends who had married, I could ask them.
Garrett Pence came to mind, and Dan opened his eyes, a smile forming on his lips. He hadnât thought of Garrett recently. Not since Dan had stopped work on the schoolhouse for the season.
The thought of the schoolhouse reminded Dan of the dead in Coffin Cemetery and the need to bring them to Maryâs house. They need to be here, and I need to find out from them where they had been before Janet drove them out. Once Diane is taken care of, they need to go home. I promised them that when I first met them, and I need to keep that promise.
âDan?â
Dan nearly jumped out of his chair, his heart thundering as he looked up and saw Thomas and Bridget Lane standing in the kitchen with him.
