Lunch had been a wonderful little getaway, and Jen was so grateful to have gotten out on a Saturday afternoon. Carrie was the one who reminded Jen of Emily's suggested coffee shop. And so they decided to make a trip to Coffee It Up! Carrie returned with two lattes as Jen claimed their table.

“This is nice,” Jen said.

“All the kids rave, so I guess this must be the new hip. Feels crowded and a little grungy if you ask me.”

“Well, I guess grunge is still in,” Jen said. “Good latte, though. Did you see they have live music on Friday nights? We should come down sometime.”

Suddenly a woman brushed past their table, the soft black fur of her coat lightly caressing Jen's cheek. Its familiar feel was nearly electrifying to Jen. Following the figure wearing the short black jacket, Jen nearly lost her breath. As if punched in the stomach, she leaned heavily across the table.

Carrie caught hold of her arm. “What's the matter? You look like you've seen a ghost!” She tossed a glance over her shoulder and then offered Jen a sip from her water glass.

“I … my … I … my …!” Jen stared at the blond head of Tiffany, whom she recognized, wearing Jen's own sealskin jacket. Directly behind Carrie, Tiffany removed the coat and draped it over the back of the chair. She sat down across a table from a woman, about her own age.

“That's my sealskin jacket,” Jen hissed.

Carrie turned around. “Are you sure?”

“My God, look at it. Have you ever seen anything like it? It is one of a kind—look at the ermine trim! I kept it in a cedar chest in the storage unit. That's Tiffany. Coincidence?”

“Hey, you don't have to get snotty with me. I'm just checkin’.”

“I want it back.” Jen made to get up.

Carrie stopped her. “What are you gonna do?”

“I'm going to grab it, then I'm going to tear out her hair.”

“No, wait a minute.” Carrie rose. “She's got a friend there.”

“I don't care. I want it back right this minute! It's mine!”

“Jen.” Carrie pulled her back to the seat. “Sit. Look, I promise, we will not leave this coffee shop without that jacket, but you gotta be smart.”

Jen breathed out and sat back. She looked into the eyes of her new friend and saw a kind of tenacity she felt herself lacking. How do you get what you want when everything seems to go against you? It was there, in the steadiness of Carrie's gaze, that Jen found some strength. She decided to trust the promise.

The coffee shop was bustling with students hefting book bags, customers chattering, Celtic music drifting above, and wait-staff weaving in and out of it all. With all the commotion, it was easy for the Dynamic Duo to move into action when Tiffany got up and headed toward the bathroom. Carrie rose, turned, and stopped just in front of Tiffany's coffee companion.

Jen watched as Carrie approached the younger woman.

“Don't I know you?” Carrie asked her.
