Ariana felt someone touch her—her mind, she thought, not her physical being. It was the most bizarre thing. Malik? Yes, it had been Malik. But she knew it wasn’t possible. Then she was just waking when she heard someone enter her room.

Xalta. “Hello, the duke wished me to wake you in the event you were still asleep because he was afraid you wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight otherwise.”

So kind of him to care.

“Your wardrobe is filled with clothes. Choose anything you wish to wear, and if you’d like, I can show you all of the castle and its grounds,” Xalta said.

“And the portal room?” Other than boats that Ariana could use to escape the island, that’s the only other thing she really wanted to see. She had no plan to stay here any longer than she had to.

Xalta smiled as if she thought Ariana had a great sense of humor, but she was serious.

“Sure. I can show it to you. There’s no sense in you searching for it on your own. You can’t operate it, so the duke won’t mind if you see it.”

Great. Still, what if Ariana was able to somehow figure it out? She hurried to dress in a blue gown and brown suede boots. Finally, she was able to wear something other than white! “Does Faraday live here?” She assumed that if she could learn a way to operate the portal, Faraday would stop her. So she really was hoping he didn’t live here.

“Oh, heaven’s no. He has his own castle somewhere. No one knows where. We were surprised to see him arrive at the nooning meal. We suspect it was because the duke and his men had vanished, and then here you both show up. Then he came to see what had happened.”

“Maybe he has the same kind of protection spell over his castle too.”

“That could be. He’s very secretive, like most wizards are. But he’s even more so because he hides the duke’s residence and the duke’s an outlaw. That makes Faraday one too.”

“Do you ever leave the castle and return to the mainland?” Ariana hoped Xalta could tell her more about where she’d end up once she was back on the mainland.

“No. I’ve been here since I was a girl. I haven’t known any other place.”

“Your family?”

“All gone.”

“If I can find a way to leave the castle, would you want me to take you with me? I’d make sure you had a castle to reside in, if you liked. Or a village. You would be able to see the whole wide world, and not just this island.”

Xalta didn’t say anything for several moments, just straightening the room, that was already perfectly neat. Well, maybe the bed was a bit mussed up.

Maybe Ariana shouldn’t have offered, but she felt if the woman needed saving, even if she wasn’t on anyone’s master guardian angel list, Ariana would do it.

“Ferdinand was with the men taken by the dragon fae.” Xalta’s eyes filled with tears. “Duke Tully
