Chapter 10

Rudy woke in the night. He needed to relieve himself and had no idea what time it was and didn’t want to wake Darius. At the moment they were not physically touching. Rudy held his chest and made his way to the edge of the bed, feet on the floor. He checked on Darius, but the big man was sound asleep, most likely exhausted from everything they had both been through.

Rudy managed to stand and reached out in front of him to make it to the wall near the bathroom. He closed himself in first, then turned on the light, squinting at the brightness. Once he had finished at the toilet, he washed his hands and inspected the neck wound in the mirror. He swallowed hard deliberately to see if he could feel the internal injury, but the ache had subsided.

Rudy shut the light and opened the door. He didn’t return to bed, but he stopped to listen for a moment. Darius’ breathing was deep and there was no doubt he was sound asleep.

Rudy used the wall to make his way down the hall towards the kitchen for water. His chest was aching and non-aspirin painkillers were his only relief. Before he made it to the refrigerator he noticed the boxes appearing intrusive in the small space of the living room. Rudy’s heart sank at the inconvenience he had become to this sweet man. Now I’ve taken over his home.

He had no idea why three boxes had been packed by Darius’ police friends when Rudy would have been content with a few pairs of briefs, jeans, and T-shirts.

Drawn to the boxes to see what else they contained, Rudy could see the interior of the room from the light coming in through a window in the kitchen. There was a streetlight and several security spotlights outside the apartment house which allowed him plenty of illumination without having to turn on a lamp and risk waking Darius.

He had previously opened the wardrobe box and knew the contents. Rudy crouched down by another smaller box and opened the overlapping flaps. The items inside surprised him. Not only were there some of his gay porn videos, but they had packed photos as well.

Rudy picked up one eight by ten framed picture and held it facing the window light. It was a group shot of his men; his medic unit. They were eager to be on the battleground and help the wounded. Seeing his buddies’ happy faces made him smile, but the joy was short lived. Each man had been cut down in their prime.

…and then there was one…me.

He replaced the picture and rummaged through more clothing; briefs, socks, shirts, shoes…At least he had something to wear.

Beginning to feel weary from the pain, Rudy rubbed his chest, standing up, with intentions of getting water from the refrigerator. He thought he heard men’s voices outside the apartment door. Paranoid of any and everything in his life, Rudy made his way to the door and looked through the spy hole.
