The empty, bleak road seems to stretch on forever and it feels like even at nearly 90 miles per hour I’m not getting anywhere.
More of Michael is ashore now, but just the outer edges. I suspect this is merely an approved-for-all-audiences preview of coming attractions.
The rain has increased and, driven by the wind, turned into a barrage of bullet-like drops that pelt the vehicle with a velocity I wouldn’t have thought possible before now.
The wind has intensified too. Its sustained force bending the tall narrow pines to over a 45-degree angle, pressing them to just before the point of breaking. Its gusts actually shift my car about on the highway.
I’m almost certain I’m still in the outer bands, and I’ve never seen anything quite like this.
The slanting sheets of rain make it difficult to see, the frenetically swiping wipers impotent against the deluge.
The whirring of the wind is haunting and ominous, something about its whistling, silent sound making me feel even more isolated and lonely.
The asphalt highway is so wet and slick, the wind so fierce and powerful, the driving, windswept rain so thick and impenetrable, I know I should slow down and drive more cautiously but I can’t. I just can’t do anything but race toward my children as fast as I can.
I realize when I think of rescuing my children I am thinking of all three—my two girls and the baby boy who for far too short a time was my son.
When I round the next curve, I turn in to heavier rain and more intense winds.
The highway is littered with limbs and leaves and debris, all clinging wetly to the asphalt.
The quality of light in the sky has changed. The day is darker now, more monochromatic, its gray different in tone and texture than the more ordinary overcast iterations.
As I continue, the debris on the road increases, larger limbs and branches beginning to block sections of the road.
Visibility drops even further. It’s like I’m trying to see underwater, except for the briefest of moments when the wipers first cut a swath through the pool of rain and before it refills the spot.
I’m forced to slow down and to drive in a more zigzag pattern.
But even attempting to navigate around the larger clumps of tree and debris I’m still bouncing over plenty that I shouldn’t be, my car thudding hard back onto the pavement after catching air and having its tires spin freely for a moment, its backend fishtailing and causing me to swerve when the rubber of the rear tires makes contact with the wet asphalt again.
Even as I’m trying desperately to avoid debris and keep my car on the road, I’m searching for Rudy’s car, scanning the ditches and side roads for any sign of the kidnapper I intend to arrest and file charges against. But there is no sign of him or anyone else.
I’m in a dark, wet world, completely abandoned by all others.
My head fills and my ears pop as the pressure continues to drop.
