Silver Angel

She dresses in the grey light of Christmas morning,

woken early by the shrieks next door,

and pins the angel to her jumper. It’s real silver.

His gift from forty years before.

Downstairs, she arms herself to thwart the silence,

before it piles into a deep snowdrift –

radio, jigsaw, kettle, for lunch a tin of soup,

some cheese and crackers at half-past six –

then through the walls come screams and laughter

and some old song of which she’s fond,

which let in the absence of a son half a world away,

and a husband in the one beyond,

and she has to tell herself this day, too, will pass,

after all, they always have before.

It’s then she hears it – like a quickened heartbeat –

that gentle knock upon her door.
