ODYSSEUS AND THE CROW-WOMEN

Homer also describes Odysseus’s encounter with creatures that sound very like the stryx, bloodthirsty crow-women who lured sailors to their deaths. This painting by John William Waterhouse shows Odysseus and his men trying to resist the lures of the siren by covering their ears and tying themselves to the ship.

THE BLOODTHIRSTY BRIDE

Both the ancient Greeks and Romans told the tale of a young man named Menippus who married a beautiful young woman. At the wedding, one of the guests, a noted philosopher named Apollonius of Tyana, grew suspicious of the bride. He observed her carefully, and finally, he accused her of being a vampire. The bride immediately confessed her true nature. She had wanted to marry Menippus merely to have him around as a handy source of fresh blood.
