It was 4:00 am when Carlie heard the door to the kitchen opening. Not knowing what to expect next, she held her breath and waited for the worst.

She was relieved to the point of being almost giddy when she heard Jon’s voice asking her what she was doing up so early.

“Jesus, Jon, you scared me to death.”

“I’m sorry—I didn’t mean to. What are you doing?”

“I’m just reading.”

“This couldn’t wait until morning?”

“No, it really couldn’t. Last night I relived Edith’s story about the death of Patrick. I think Patrick finally succeeded in killing Andrew.”

Jon finished loading the coffee maker and pressed the button for it to start. When Carlie didn’t continue, he said, “Well, what happened to him?”

Over the next hour and two cups of coffee, Carlie recounted her nightmare of the dead body in the woods and Patrick and the horses trying to kill Andrew.

When Carlie was finished, Loretta, who had been listening from the doorway to the living room, gasped and said, “My good God, what the hell was wrong with those people?”

Walking into the kitchen, Loretta poured herself a cup of coffee and sat down at the kitchen table with Carlie and Jon.

Carlie took a moment and thumbed through the journal she had been reading when Jon interrupted her. “A lot happened over the next year. Becky and Noel moved back to her parents’ house. Ian fell into a deep depression and became even more abusive toward Edith. He moved into Patrick and Becky’s bedroom, completely away from Edith. The farm was going downhill pretty quickly. Considering Daniel was doing all the work alone, they barely planted enough crops to keep the cattle alive for the winter. Ian had taken to drinking and spent days at a time in town getting drunk.
