On behalf of his employers, union leader Sauvé was establishing the new default truth in the minds of the public. It was an uplifting story in a greater tragic tale. That Stevenson had gone down fighting wasn’t quite a dream ending, but it was better than her being outmanoeuvred and coldly gunned down without getting off a shot of her own.

The embellished narrative flushed out a witness who was willing to whisper a protest.

Bernard Myra had seen more than anyone at the Cloverleaf Circle scene, but he had kept quiet for almost three months. After contacting the RCMP, Myra was interviewed at his home on July 13, 2020.

A few minutes prior to shooting Stevenson, Wortman had wounded RCMP constable Chad Morrison on Highway 224. Myra and his wheelchair-bound wife, Elizabeth Small, had been driving south from Mastodon Ridge, a park just north of Shubenacadie, and were passing the entrance to the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park when they saw two police cars race out from Highway 224, turn left in front of them and head toward the bridge. The first car (Morrison’s) was nearly out of control and was “fishtailing and then he got straightened out.”

According to Myra, Morrison crossed the bridge over the river, and then the bridge over southbound Highway 2, and entered the Cloverleaf Circle exchange. The exit to southbound Highway 2 was about 100 metres ahead on the right, almost directly across the highway from the ramp where people who are headed north on Highway 2 get dumped out. After Morrison took the exit, Myra said, Wortman slowed down for a moment as he, too, approached the exit. It was then that Myra noticed another Mountie cruiser coming up the ramp on the other side of the road.
