Case One: Impromptu Seating in Undergraduate Industrial Design

Students in this undergraduate industrial design course were assigned a “client-inspired” project focused on designing seating for a business context. The client was engaged in the review process at two different stages—during a formative concept review and a final summative review—and offered the student with the best design award money and a summer internship. Seven students were included in the provided dataset, one of which was also present in the graduate dataset, but is not included in our analysis.

The assigned project “was to design ‘impromptu’ seating options for a real client that will provide a modern solution to collaborative work environments and be versatile in corporate and vertical market segments” (provided course syllabus in Adams & Siddiqui, 2014), supported through five design reviews, the first four of which were individual desk crits (Figure 2).
