There are various ways in which architects achieve the complexity born of interplay between regularity and irregularity. Below left is the plan and section of Gino Valle’s Casa Quaglia, built in Sutrio, Italy in 1956. Here, by subtraction, a complex composition of walls is framed within a regular square framework. The plan of Alvaro Siza’s Bires House (Povoa do Varzim, Portugal 1976) is alongside; it seems to have had a corner ripped untidily from its otherwise tidy orthogonal geometry.
