Menace

The jungle was seething with life, as Will, Treyvin, and the two pirates made their way slowly but steadily up the hill. Bugs crawled underfoot, birds chirped in the canopy, and vegetation rustled as small creatures scurried out of their way. Treyvin kept an industrious eye out, scanning the foliage overhead for snakes, while Will eyed the mass of bush on either side.

Finally, they reached the top of the ridge, and Gold Grin gestured everyone to stop.

Will set down the sack of snake meat and mopped his brow. They all checked the ground and trees carefully before selecting a safe spot to sit in the middle of their makeshift path. Treyvin slumped down beside Will. Gold Grin handed out a few small strips of dried beef. Spider Face shook the waterskins. “Half empty. We’ll have to visit a spring soon.”

Will was too exhausted to speak. The gargantula and snake were nothing compared to the task ahead: facing a fiery dragon.

After munching in silence and taking a few quick sips, the bedraggled party headed down the other side of the hill. The jungle wasn’t as dense here, probably because of the fierce wind that whistled across the ocean all the way from the Wastelands—the deserts where the Robandi assassins lived—and rattled the foliage. This side of the island was so windswept, the trees grew on an angle, their trunks leaning toward the hillside like drunken pirates.

Now and then, through the vegetation, glimpses of a sandy bay showed. Jagged spires of mustard-colored rock rose from the water with barely the breadth of half a longboat between them. Will sucked in his breath. Like a littling with an overcrowded mouth of teeth, the whole bay was crammed full of those rocks. It was more treacherous than the route they’d taken—snakes, gargantulas, and all.

They half strode, half slid, down between the trees, the machetes now strapped across the pirates’ backs because they were no longer needed. They scrambled over vines and ducked around bushes, the pirates leading the way. Will tried his best to help Treyvin, who was lagging behind. Blood was seeping through the back of his friend’s shirt again. Gods, had it only been yesterday that they’d tasted the lash. Will stretched his own back, the wounds from the jagged barbs on the cat-o-nine-tails still stiff and aching.

He parted a mass of vines for Treyvin, carefully checking that none were snakes, and waited for his mate to catch up. When Treyvin was through, Will dropped the vines behind them and headed downhill.

Ahead, Spider Face and Gold Grin were crouching on a rocky projection, peering through some bushes. Will and Treyvin joined them on their vantage point.

The jungle finished halfway down the slope, giving way to an enormous cliff of golden sand, the same color as the rocks in the shallow bay. Nestled in the middle of that steep sandy slope was a sea dragon—an enormous beast with scales of emerald and sapphire glinting in the sun. One of her horns was jagged—the other half probably impaled in someone’s gut, or the gut of another dragon.
