Chapter Nineteen

~

J ustin dressed up for the big meeting. They met at the same haberdashery where Justin had dined with Lord Underwood.

“We thought some discretion was still warranted,” Zimmer said. He introduced two of his associates. One was a young lawyer Oliver knew, and the other was Service Muncie, one of the two partners who ran the firm.

“Service is a very old-fashioned name,” Muncie said after being introduced. “My father always used to joke; I am of service to everyone. I only laughed because everyone else did.”

They sat down and called a server to take their orders.

“We have two matters to discuss today. The first is a response to Lady Rosemount’s suit asking for everything but the shell of the vacation house,” Zimmer said.

“It is a large shell,” Oliver said.

The other three attorneys laughed.

“The other is the intellectual property suit by Castlemount. Such actions are not our specialty, but we have been scrupulous not to involve ourselves in Castlemount Arms matters, so there is no client conflict,” Zimmer said. “Oliver sent the lawsuit to us, so we’ve had a few days to research.”

“Justin is a major shareholder,” Oliver said. “Is that a conflict?”

“No,” Service said. “The trust is listed as the shareholder, and it is an anonymous holding, and we administer the trust. We need to discuss how we can assist the trust and the trustee in agreeing with Castlemount.”

“That would only improve our position,” Oliver said.

“Most likely,” Muncie said. “What shall we consume first? Lunch, The widow Rosemount, or shall we deal with Castlemount?”

All four legal men looked at Justin. “Lunch is still cooking, so I’d rather take care of Lady Rosemount.”

Justin sat back and let the lawyers talk. Lunch was served, and the discussion continued. He understood most of it, but some terms flummoxed Justin.

“From our standpoint as trustees, your position is strong. We already have witnesses deposed concerning your identity, confirming you were the only issue of Fidelia James Rosemount. We have Rosemount’s letter to you, which has been in our possession for a decade. The titles to the three major properties in the vacation estate are in our possession,” Zimmer said.

“We don’t know what the widow has other than a desire for more property. If she comes up with something, we can bargain away the flower nursery or the charcoal business, but I don’t think it will go further.”

“I like the cottage by the lake,” Justin said. “I want to keep that. I can give up the sailboat, but not the boathouse. I don’t see why she has rights to the contents.”

“Noted,” Zimmer said. “That is all we can do for now until the suit proceeds, and that won’t be until after Winter Break.”

The Castlemount suit was a similar approach. Oliver and the young attorney had both conducted research on garonite, and the collection of evidence was even more substantial that Castlemount didn’t have full rights to the basic composite process. However, the Hastings and Muncie attorney found a few basic elements of the process that were developed by Castlemount.
