Chapter Twenty-On

~

Justin had lost an afternoon of classes, but his evening was free. He wasn’t prepared to return to Shan’s kitchen, so he spent half on studies and the other half on character writing.

He was about to take a break by taking a walking tour of the street food vendors in the students market when Mort walked through the back door.

“I would have gotten here a few minutes sooner, but I didn’t have the key to the carriage house.”

“Mort is a man of infinite talents,” Cash Edwards said from behind.

Justin’s plans had just changed. “Zach isn’t in tonight,” Justin said. “Have you eaten?”

“We have. I know I could stand some time to wash up and rest. We rode straight through,” Mort said.

“I’ll show you to your room, Cash, and then I’m going to get some food for myself.”

“It wouldn’t hurt to bring some snacks when you return,” Cash said.

Justin nodded, trudged two flights to the third level, and gave Cash the biggest room. “The washroom is down the hall. We have some modern conveniences in this place.”

“So, Mort says,” Cash said as he walked through the door and shut it behind him.

Justin shrugged at the closed door and went out into the night. He had his wand and a sword strapped on beneath his coat. Walking through the market lanes with Farah was more fun, but he couldn’t tarry like he had intended with Mort returning with a guest.

After collecting a wide assortment of street food that required Justin to buy a shopping bag, he ran into Zach and Patty bundled up, enjoying the night market.

“You aren’t going to eat all that, are you? Didn’t the emperor feed you at lunch?” Zach asked with a grin, making Patty giggle.

“Mort returned bearing a big gift,” Justin said.

“Cash? Already?” Zach asked.

Justin nodded. “They’ve eaten, but I don’t know how long ago. I didn’t expect you back, so while they cleaned up, I collected these.”

“You’d better hurry home so they don’t freeze,” Zach said.

“It’s not freezing, Patty said.

Zach smirked. “No, but it’s cold.” He turned to Justin. “We will come with you. Patty is curious about him, anyway.”

Zach’s girlfriend slapped his arm. “I am not.”

“You aren’t? I would be,” Zach said as they followed Justin and rushed to the house.

Mort and Cash enjoyed some wine at the kitchen table.

“I brought a couple of strays,” Justin said with a smile.

“Zach and Patty?” Mort said immediately.

The door opened, and Mort beamed with victory. “I was right.”

Justin distributed the street food, which was barely warm enough to eat.

“A young person’s selection,” Cash said.

Justin shrugged. “I am a young person.” He tried not to be irked by Cash’s mild insult.

“You have a report?” Zach asked. “Anything urgent?”

“My funding request. That’s urgent,” Cash said.

Justin groaned inside. He wasn’t looking forward to the conversation.

“We’ll save that for tomorrow,” Zach said.

Cash looked at Justin.

“I agree. Get a good night’s rest first,” Justin said. He was ready for a good night’s rest at this point. “Have you had more attacks?”

Cash shook his head.
