CHAPTER 21
Winter break now seemed ages long, Tom thought as he entered the LGBT&F club room for the first activities day of the new semester. Bill and Jason, who had been talking with their heads together, immediately separated the moment they spotted Tom. Bill nodded at the empty seat next to him while Jason had his eyes set on Tom. Tom shifted on his feet and gave a quick glance around the room to see if there was anywhere else he might sit. Judy was methodically scratching dried paint off her fingers at the far end of the table while the possibly bisexual boy was taking up the seat next to her. Tom thought his name might be Mark, but wasn’t sure. Tom still didn’t know him well, but he was currently transfixed on Kory and Darren, who were having a heated conversation diagonally from him.
“I just don’t understand why you have to wear them,” Kory said a bit too loud.
Darren sternly said, “They were a gift. What’s it matter?”
“You know why it matters,” Kory said, his heat petering out.
As Tom walked behind them to get to the other side of the table, he looked down and noted that Darren was wearing the loafers that Tom had given him. When he looked back up, he noticed that Bill and Jason were both following him with their eyes. Bill whispered something to Jason, neither boy’s eyes ever leaving Tom. Tom paused at the head of the table where Mora was occupied with notes scribbled on a legal pad on the table in front of her and asked, “Where are Jeremy and Kyle?” He didn’t want to interrupt her concentration, but he needed a reason to delay the inevitable and feigning curiosity about the whereabouts of her two cronies seemed acceptable.
“Senate,” Mora said without looking up.
Tom nodded. Bill and Jason were still eyeing him. He didn’t really have a choice, did he?
“Hey, everyone. Welcome back,” Isaac said as he walked into the room.
Kory and Darren hushed up and Mora switched her focus from the notes to Isaac.
Tom brightened up. He was happy to see Isaac and eager to talk to him about everything that happened over the break, but more so, he was relieved to have an excuse to plop down in the seat next to Mora.
“I hope winter break was great for everyone,” Isaac said, taking the empty seat next to Bill, who was shrugging from whatever Jason had whispered to him. “Last semester’s club events were very successful. We registered a ton of people to vote. Well done, all of you. We couldn’t have done it without the time you put into working the table.”
Kory glanced over at Tom, who shifted in his seat.
“So, what’s next?” Jason asked. He began to play with one of the piercings in his ear.
“I’ll have Mora tell you about that,” Isaac said with a smile. “Mora?”
Mora stood up, clutching her legal pad in one hand while she pushed her hair out of her face with the other.
