Chapter 5

“LOOK WHAT ADAM GOT ME,” Heather said, holding out her arm. She beamed with excitement.

Heather asked me out for coffee a few days after Adam kissed me. Correction — after Adam and I kissed. I was not going to shy away from my own responsibility over what happened. I accepted her offer, not because I wanted to see her, but because I wanted to keep up appearances.

I hated doing stuff for appearance’s sake. That was more Josh’s style. But even I had to admit it was important to keep everything as normal as possible. I wasn’t sure whether she knew anything and was afraid that avoiding her would look suspicious.

Which made me wonder what Adam had been thinking when he bought Heather a silver Tiffany bracelet with a heart-shaped charm. As a guilt gift, it was painfully obvious. Or maybe he needed to remind himself that he loved Heather. Either way, I hated what that bracelet symbolized.

“Wow, that’s gorgeous,” I said as brightly as I could. “When did you get it?”

“Two days ago. He surprised me with it, no reason at all. Isn’t that sweet?”

“Yeah.”

“Adam’s never been one for romantic gifts, so this was a huge surprise.” Heather fingered one of the links. “I wonder if he’s finally listening to me. He’s always said jewelry was a waste of money and never bought me any, and now he gets me a Tiffany bracelet.”

“Very cool.”

“A Tiffany bracelet!”

Like I hadn’t heard her the first time. Besides, if I’d missed it both times, the huge, branded charm dangling from her wrist would’ve reminded me where Adam had bought it.

“I wonder what made him change his mind,” she said. “He’s always been the cheapskate. He hates shopping.”

I shrugged, hoping that the casual gesture would hide my own suspicions. For someone who hated shopping, Adam sure knew how to pick a nice present.

“I keep telling him if he got a promotion, he wouldn’t have to worry about wasting money,” Heather continued. “We could afford more nice things without stressing out over it, you know? He always told me I had champagne taste on a beer budget. If he worked harder, we could have a champagne budget.”

“Mm-hmm.”

“He could even get me nicer jewelry. This bracelet is very sweet and I love it, but it looks like I’ll have to train him to recognize the good stuff. Suburban Tiffany won’t do in the long run.”

I wanted to slap her. How could Heather be so selfish and spoiled? She wanted to force Adam to work harder than he was already for…what? More stuff? They already had the kind of life other people strived for their entire careers, yet Heather wasn’t satisfied.

Just like Josh, Heather always wanted more.

I gulped the rest of my coffee and forced the most apologetic expression I could on my face. “I’m sorry I have to run, but I remembered I promised Josh I’d get dinner tonight,” I said.

“You’re so nice,” she said. “You’re always taking care of Josh. That’s what Adam tells me anyway.
