There was so much going on I barely had a moment to think these days. Ever since the Terrenos had arrived early, it had been luncheon this, meeting that, feast later. I barely had time to handle all of our own kingdom’s goings-on, let alone the fact that King Jai seemed to want my attention every waking hour.

I couldn’t help but have sympathy for the Princess, though. King Jai insisted on always bringing her along, but he never let her speak. She was simply a decoration in the background to him, if one that he wanted protected at all costs.

“I can agree to those trade routes, and importing more of our silk, but I want access to your gems in the mountains.”

For the last day or so King Jai and I had been specifically on the topic of trade: one of the most tedious topics, but also one of the most necessary.

“That seems a fair trade to me,” I replied.

“I would also ask that Prince Liam spend some time with Princess Jada.”

Well, that came out of nowhere.

I eyed him carefully, then Jada. She looked bored and disinterested as usual. Sometimes I wondered if she had a place she could retreat to in her mind to avoid all these dull meetings. I whimsically wondered if I could join her.

“I’m sure Prince Liam would be delighted to spend some time with the Princess.” A small snort-like noise came from the corner, and my eyes darted back over to Jada. She was definitely trying to hold in a laugh. Apparently she was listening far more than it seemed.

“He’s got a lot to learn about being a royal, but I’m afraid I’m a bit desperate. The Princess has turned down every one of her suitors,” he gave me a pointed look, “as you well know.”

I nodded politely. “Fortunately for us, it was a mutual decision. For without that, I would not have met my Evelyn.”

King Jai looked wistful for a moment. “Yes, indeed. Lovely girl. Very demure.”

I bristled slightly at his recounting of her.

“She shall make you an excellent queen,” he stated matter-of-factly. I had no doubt she would, but hated the implication that we thought so for the same reasons.

“I think that concludes negotiations for the day. The tournament begins in two days, and there’s still much that needs preparing. I am grateful for this new partnership of ours, King Jai. I think it will bring both of our kingdoms much prosperity.” I stood and offered a bow to King Jai, who did the same.

He clapped me on the shoulder. As jolly as he looked, was quite tall when he stood, and I struggled to not feel like a mere boy playing at king with his strong hand on my shoulder. “I am grateful as well.” He quieted a moment. “My only wish is that I had done this sooner. Your father was a good man.”

“Thank you,” I said sincerely. He was a great man.

Princess Jada obediently stood with her father, and I offered a respectful nod to her as they both left the meeting space.
