Nimiri looked at Jemima with wide eyes. âWhen I said you smelled different, I wasnât expecting this.â
Jemima grinned as she kissed her daughterâs apple red cheek. âYep, it is what it is. Iâm food now.â
âAnd youâre okay with that?â Nimiri asked with a small grin.
âNot particularly, no.â She looked at Nimiri. âI loved being a vampire. It has a lot of advantages.â
Nimiri shook her head. She had experienced a lot of things in her life, some she couldnât explain. But this topped them all. A vampire becoming human again. She wondered what Tahliaâs take was on this.
âAnd the queen?â
âWhat about her?â Jemima asked as she deftly removed the diaper from her daughter. âPlease, pass me the powder.â Nimiri handed her the powder. âYou wonder how sheâs taking this.â
âYes.â
âIâm not sure. She hasnât said anything to me yet.â
Nimiri blinked. âYou mean this is a new thing.â
âTwenty-six hours, to be exact.â She held the baby out to Nimiri. âHere, hold her.â
Still reeling from the unexpected news about Jemimaâs transformation, she wasnât sure she was ready to hold the baby. She could drop her and it wouldnât bode well for her to drop the daughter of the vampire queen and the soul mate of her own Prime. She began to shake her head.
âI wonât have that. You said it yourself that you were tasked to watch over her in Leonaraâs absence. Now, hold her.â
âWhat if I drop her?â The baby was hanging in the air, staring at her with a peculiar expression in her eyes. A disturbingly mature look for a nine-month old. âAnyway, she doesnât seem to like me.â
âI didnât hear her say anything.â
Dragonâs bones. The last time she had touched a baby was such a long time ago. She tore her gaze away from the childâs near-hypnotic glare. âI assure you, she doesnât want me to touch her.â
âShe always looks like that. Sheâs Tahliaâs child,â Jemima threw over her shoulder as she gathered the soiled diaper for disposal.
No pressure, huh. She hesitantly reached out and grasped the baby under her armpits. The blue eyes studied her closely.
âHold her against your body. Babies like that.â
Nimiri carefully pulled the baby against her chest and she was stunned by the heat that came off the small body. It felt wonderful. She didnât know what came over her, but she gently pressed a kiss to the soft head. Almost immediately, her body was infused with a delicious heat and she looked into the eyes of the baby. They were warm and twinkling.
âSee, I told you that you wouldnât drop her.â Jemima came closer and rubbed her daughterâs back. The next moment, Aria let out a piercing cry that startled both Jemima and Nimiri. Nimiri immediately held the baby out to Jemima, who cradled Aria against her chest, making soft noises to calm the baby.
âJemima, I think...â
âShe likes you,â Jemima said quickly as she kissed the crying babyâs cheek. âMaybe she just got startled by something.â
âSheâs bleeding, Jemima.â
âWhat?!â Jemima looked at her and Nimiri held up her bloody hands.
