Chapter Fourteen

There wasn't much space for her to hide. The server room was cramped and the only space she could get into was behind the door.

It was a childhood tactic but it was her only option aside from scrambling under the desk.

Niki circled quickly and stepped behind the door. She hadn't come in with a weapon since the blueprints had told them metal detectors had been installed at the front doors. Maybe she could have picked up a taser or whatever these security guards were equipped with on their belts. That would have helped.

Maybe pepper spray too.

She could hear footsteps approaching the door and her entire body tensed in response. Her mind hadn’t yet managed to formulate even a rough plan of what she could do, but she had a feeling it would come to her in a rush when the time came. Taylor and Vickie remained silent, likely not wanting to distract her or maybe trying to find some way to help her.

The door opened and she pressed back against the wall. Booted feet stepped inside and stopped as the guards tried to identify something in the darkened server room. She held her breath to avoid being heard in any way as the three men surveyed the area.

Taylor would have been able to handle the three of them but she was another story. She could disable one or maybe two, but three would be too much.

Her gaze lowered to the closest man's belt and a can of pepper spray secured there.

An idea began to form. It probably wasn’t a good one, but it would be a matter of time until they decided to check behind the door.

Vickie still needed time, though.

Niki sucked in a slow breath. Her pulse ticked like a time bomb waiting to go off.

"I'm good. Get the dongle!"

She had waited for the hacker’s signal and surged into action like she'd been shot from a gun. Her body powered into the nearest man with enough force to thrust him forward into his two comrades and allowed her to snatch the pepper spray from his belt. As the three tried to extricate themselves and recover from the confusion, she yanked the dongle from the port.

Something snapped as she pulled it out and she wondered if she’d broken something, but Vickie probably already had everything she needed and wouldn't need to use the device anymore.

Hopefully.

Niki backed to the door, took the safety off the spray canister, and pressed the button with her thumb. The air in the room felt like it turned to fire in that split second, but she darted through the entrance and slammed the door shut.

The sound of the lock clicking into place told her Vickie was still watching her back. She could hear shouting from inside the room as the men realized what had happened and why they were suddenly blinded.

The hope that they hadn't been able to see her face was a reasonable one, as well as the fact that she'd caught less than a whiff of the pepper spray.
