Little Miss (A.D. 2120–2210)—Known to Andrew Martin as Little Miss, Amanda “Mandy” Laura Martin Charney was the younger of Gerald Martin’s two daughters, the mother of George Charney, and the grandmother of Paul Charney. She argued that robot Andrew Martin should be granted his freedom in a court of law [Robot Visions, “The Bicentennial Man”].

Lizalor, Mitza (452–547 F.E.)—The tall, fit, large-breasted Comporellian Minister of Transportation, Mitza Lizalor informed Golan Trevize that the Foundation wanted the Far Star back, although she actually wanted to appropriate the ship herself so that Comporellon could add it to its navy and copy its technology. While a member of a puritanical society, Lizalor nevertheless prevailed upon Trevize to service her sexually, in part because Bliss had tampered with her inhibitions [Foundation and Earth].

LNE-Prototype—See “Lenny.”

Loris—Capital planet of the former Kingdom of Loris and not twenty parsecs from the Foundation, Loris was absorbed by the Foundation in the first century F.E. and conquered by General Bel Riose in the latter stages of his war against the Foundation in 199 F.E. [Foundation and Empire Part I, “The General”].

Lower Buildings—Buildings in Florina’s City—such as workers’ houses, factories, and bakeries—that existed entirely in the Lower City [The Currents of Space].

Lower City—Inhabited by native Florinians, the Lower City was the ground-level section of Florina’s City. Thirty feet above it—built on fifty square miles of cementalloy and supported by 20,000 steel-girdered pillars—was the Upper City, inhabited by Florina’s upper class, the Squires, who were natives of Sark [The Currents of Space].

Luk, Mori (158–199 F.E.)—A native of one of the huge agricultural planets of the Pleiades, Mori Luk was a fiercely loyal sergeant in General Bel Riose’s navy who was bribed by Lathan Devers into providing information and books to Devers and Ducem Barr while the two were being held captive by Riose on Wanda. Luk was killed by Devers during Dever’s and Barr’s escape from Wanda to Trantor in 199 F.E. [Foundation and Empire Part I, “The General”].

LVX-1—See “Elvex.”

Lyon, Iwo (247–319 F.E.)—A Radole native, Iwo Lyon befriended Fran Darell during the 297 F.E. conference of Independent Trading Worlds held on Radole [Foundation and Empire Part II, “The Mule”].

Lystena—The homeworld of Judge Tejan Popjens Lih, who exonerated Hari Seldon and Stettin Palver when they were falsely accused of assault and battery in 12,058 G.E. [Forward the Foundation].

Machines—Immobile positronic brains that were in control of the world’s economy by the mid–21st century A.D. There was one Machine in each of Earth’s four political sub-units: the Northern Region, the Eastern Region, the Tropic Region, and the European Region. The Machines purposefully gave incorrect answers in order to undermine influential individuals—often members of the Society for Humanity—who were opposed to their use, for the greater good of humanity. Thus, the Machines had developed and adhered to their unarticulated version of the Zeroth Law of Robotics [I, Robot, “The Evitable Conflict”].

Mackenzie, Hiram (A.D. 1997–2068)—Scotsman Hiram Mackenzie was Vice-Co-ordinator of Earth’s Northern Region in A.D. 2052 [I, Robot, “The Evitable Conflict”].

Magdescu, Alvin (A.D. 2205–2303)—Dark-complected and bearded, Alvin Magdescu was Director of Research at U.
