With extra urgency their mouths clashed together and their hands tugged at one another’s clothes, their breathing ragged, their want evident. Mae couldn’t even think straight, and she didn’t want to if it meant putting an end to this. She was enjoying it too much.

It was nice to feel wanted, to know she hadn’t got carried away again imagining something that wasn’t there. Okay, so this was never going to be her romantic fantasy come true. They’d spent half their time winding each other up, plus he was a single dad, both of which were not keys to a successful relationship. No, kissing Liam was simply a chemical reaction and nothing else. He was right: she shouldn’t beat herself up because she found someone attractive; she hadn’t taken a vow of chastity, or broken any laws. They were two adults enjoying each other’s company.

It helped that he was an amazing kisser. She didn’t know from one second to the next whether to expect him to be soft and tender, or hard and demanding, but she was enjoying both aspects of his attentions to her lips. It made her think of what he was capable of in other areas, and she found herself keen to find out first-hand, caution be damned. Neither of them wanted anything serious; both were likely on the rebound and in need of a serious ego boost, not to mention a physical release. She was sure it had been some time for both of them since they’d last had anything resembling a sex life.

The loud ring of Liam’s phone had him break off the kiss as though he’d been scorched, spinning round to discreetly adjust his clothes as he answered the call, as though they’d been busted by someone walking in unannounced. Mae busied herself wringing the last of the water out of his T-shirt on the draining board, hoping she didn’t look as dishevelled with lust as she felt. She was dizzy from the sudden cold turkey she was now undergoing after the withdrawal of Liam’s lips from hers. It was surprising how quickly she’d got used to kissing him. It had been intoxicating.

‘Yes, Dad, I’m fine. I’m, er, just cleaning myself up. Yes, you can bring her over. No, I’m not going to scare her. Okay, I’ll see you soon.’

Mae scrubbed at the blood on Liam’s shirt rather than try and make eye contact.

‘Dad’s on his way over with Shannon,’ he said.

‘I should probably leave before they get here.’ Before she did anything else likely to get her into trouble.

‘Are you really still going to pretend that this isn’t happening?’ He was so close she could feel his warm breath on her skin. Enough contact, apparently, for her body to go into meltdown.

He opened his mouth and she assumed it was because he was about to make another wise crack. She hadn’t expected him to kiss her again. Her eyes fluttered shut, her heart picked up an extra beat and her lips parted
