Marla hurried to the telegraph office and penciled a request to Archie. Their plan was risky and unkind, but effective. Hopefully he would agree with their plan. She had no idea how lenient Mr. Gordon would be. Did he allow his agents to get their man no matter what? Allen Pinkerton’s reputation indicated that he certainly went to great lengths, but would Archie?

She gave her note to the telegrapher and paid him. “I’ll be back to get the answer shortly.”

He nodded and set to tapping out her message.

Looking up and down the street, she determined neither Pryce nor Bronco were in sight, and scurried around to the other side of the telegraph office.

“I need this to go out as soon as possible.” She handed her package to the post mistress.

Curiosity widened her eyes. “Of course. The train will take it this evening.”

“Excellent. Thank you.” Marla paid the postage and circled back to the telegraph office. “Anything yet?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Alright.” She nodded and sat on the wooden bench. For a mining town, there were a lot of people strolling the boardwalks. She scanned the faces for two who might be Mr. Alexander’s wife and daughter. Which brought her thoughts back to Pryce. Her heart galloped into a quick pace. She focused on her breathing in an attempt to calm her silly racing heart.

Pryce expressed little confidence in her ability to fool the locals into believing their theatrics. Yet, when they were alone in the Tabor Hotel, he had kissed her as if he had all the confidence in the world for their partnership. Was he just being a foolish man, excited by the idea of them having been married and sent to a honeymoon suite? She couldn’t fault any man for such ideas.

But she had let him kiss her, too. How could she explain her own reaction to him? He was a handsome man, even though he was two decades her senior. Her heart obviously wanted more than her brain from this civilized arrangement. She shook her head. Keeping her mind on track and getting this story was more important than a run-away school-girl scheme of romance. Besides, Pryce made it very clear he wasn’t truly interested in maintaining any sort of relationship with her beyond solving this murder and theft. She needed to keep that in mind when her heart took off with crazy romantic ideas of its own.

“Ma’am!” The telegrapher called.

“Yes.” She leapt to her feet.

“You have a reply.” He handed her the wire.

She read it and tucked the paper into her reticule. Archie had approved, but warned them to be careful. “Now to find Missus Alexander and their daughter,” she said to herself and hurried back to the hotel.
