THE SECURITY GUARD gave Brennan’s nine-year-old Toyota Camry a double-take when we arrived.

“Hi,” Brennan greeted. “I just got off the phone with Veronica. She’s expecting me. My name is Tim.”

The guard looked confused, “Wait a minute. You’re the personal assistant of some high finance CEO?”

“That’s right,” Brennan replied.

The guard looked up and down the length of the Camry once again, “Your boss must be some kind of a cheapskate.”

Brennan looked at the man’s name badge, “That’s putting it lightly, Wayne. I don’t have to tell you what it’s like to work for rich men who can squeeze a nickel until the buffalo poops, am I right?”

“What?”

“I mean, the owners of Plantation View are probably sitting back in their easy chairs, smoking Cuban cigars, and raking in a hundred mil a year, while a hard-working guy like you is scraping by on peanuts. Am I right?”

Wayne blinked twice, “Yep. No doubt.”

“So, you feel some of my pain, too. It’s awful, isn’t it?”

“Sure is,” he sighed. “I’d quit if I could.”

“Well, guys like us . . . we need to hang in there. Don’t let them get you down. Never let ‘em see you sweat, Wayne.”

He nodded, “Damn straight. You’re right about that.”

“Take care of yourself,” he said. “I'd love to chat more, but Veronica is waiting for me. I need to close this deal, or my boss will have me pushing an inter-office mail-cart again. Wish me luck, Wayne.”

He nodded, punching the button to unlock the gate, “Good luck, Tim.”

Wayne waved goodbye to us as we passed through the gate.

Brennan looked at me and grinned widely.

I rolled my eyes and shook my head, “I wish you’d teach me some of that before you leave.”

“It requires a very special B.S. lobe in your brain,” he explained. “I don’t think you have it.”

I shrugged.

He smiled, “Listen carefully. Here’s the plan.”
