After work, back in George and Devoney’s rambling 1970s house in a leafy faculty neighborhood, George threw together a dinner of bagels and omelets and raced their five-year-old son off to soccer practice. Devoney stayed home to supervise their eight-year-old’s strategic deployment of cardboard, tape, and glue in the construction of a Star Wars diorama. Later, as he checked up on his Fantasy Football league before bedtime, the eight-year-old asked George for the password to the home computer. “Austen,” George said. Most of his computers answered to either “Austen” or “Burney.”
The evening felt cozy and familiar. I grew up in a leafy faculty neighborhood near a college campus, studied hard in school, married a graduate student who grew up to be a college professor, and drove my son to soccer practice. My computer password was “Chawton.” It felt completely natural to spend hours immersed in conversations about books, and after months of reading Austen spinoffs under the placid gaze of my Jane Austen Action Figure, it was energizing to return to the books themselves—fantastically good, inexhaustibly interesting. George had summed it up the night before: “What could be more wonderful about one’s life than to be able to read these books and teach them to young people who also love them?”
