Chapter 25
Members of Steven Roberts's inner circle were called the Sons of God. He controlled every aspect of their lives, including their clothing, food, and intimate sex lives. Roberts was the eldest child of a Pentecostal preacher who had fathered many children with multiple women. But unlike his dad and other men who had followers, Steven Roberts was educated. He studied law at the University of Oklahoma. But he hadnât told the self-absorbed Roberts everything. Some secrets were well worth keeping.
Heâd had Josephine for eleven years now. Sheâd passed the tests and lasted longer than any of the others. His boots crunched through the dead leaves in the woods. He knew his way through the darkness and didnât need light if the moon shone.
Heâd always been able to keep Josephine under control. He had never done to her what heâd done to the others. He kept the others hooked on heroin and dependent on him for a fix. But heâd never contemplated doing that to Josephine. She was pure. She was his queen. And she was lucky to have him.
He didnât like that tramp from the FBI questioning him. He had connections with certain men he had to keep covert. Heâd finally given up trying to train tramps. Once Eddie Forbes has turned up dead, he no longer had someone to manage the deprivation tank. He was working on a new deal.
Heâd love to show that FBI woman who was boss. He tripped over a stick. âShit!â He wasnât paying attention.
Maybe he would kill Special Agent Lexi Hunter. The idea of her destroying his plans made him furious. But he would give her a chance to redeem herself just as he had done with his other followers. Maybe she just needed coaching.
Josephine was sweet. She didnât seem to mind the basic accommodations, and he might try to spruce up the place. After she had lost the girl, she hadnât been herself. Of course, living in an underground compound meant there wasnât much sunlight. Thatâs why he allowed her to chop wood in the forest. She needed the sun. Maybe she needed another baby. He might not have the energy to raise another child, but the thought of trying to get Josephine pregnant had his loins throbbing.
Sliding back the bolt on a hidden hatch, he reached to pull the light switch, but nothing happened. Dammit. With all his authority and power, he still had too many things to do to keep up. He didnât want the other men hanging around his underground bunker. He'd kill any man that touched Josephine, and then heâd kill her. He didnât want to do that. Heâd kept her pure.
What the hell? It was dark in the cavern. Pitch black. He called out, âYou okay down here?â
Silence. He reached for a shelf and groped for a flashlight knocking some things to the cavern floor. Why wasnât she answering?
Something slammed him from behind, first to his groin and then his temple. White-hot agony sliced through his body. Holy shit.
