In 1824 the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) was formed. Originally it was part of the Department of War, which reflected its view of the Native population as a barrier to westward expansion; it was shifted in 1849 to the Department of the Interior, where it exists today. It was the BIA that implemented the decision to send Native children to boarding schools. Today, the mission of the BIA is to “enhance the quality of life, to promote economic opportunity, and to carry out the responsibility to protect and improve the trust assets of American Indians, Indian tribes, and Alaska Natives.”
