Chapter 32

Doc flipped through the large document, pleased at what he was seeing. Maya, sitting on the couch a few feet away, was focused on the same report. Merlin snorted two large lines from the glass top. Doc and Maya looked up at the noise and shook their heads at Merlin’s silent invitation to join him.

“That shit is going to kill you,” Maya said, going back to her reading.

“She’s right,” Doc said, lighting a cigarette.

“You’re one to talk,” Maya said, waving the smell of smoke away. “What total are you showing for purchase orders the last three years?”

Doc flipped through the document and gave her three numbers. She reviewed her own figures and looked up. “They tie out to the penny. Good work, Merlin.”

Merlin shrugged and sipped his drink. “All projects should be this easy.”

“Well,” Doc said. “We’re not home free, but I’m feeling good. Data conversion wrapped up in less than a month. I’ll take that any day.” Doc picked up a bottle of wine and refilled Maya’s glass.

“Trying to get me drunk?” she said, not looking up.

“Of course.”

“I think it’s working,” she said, taking a sip. “Well, now I know how much it costs to rent a cruise ship for three weeks. He invites over a thousand people a year on a cruise?”

“Yeah. He calls it his high roller cruise. I’m guessing he ends up making enough on the gambling to pay for the ship.”

“This guy is worth some serious money.” She leaned back into the couch and rubbed her eyes.

“He’s perfect for you, Maya,” Merlin said, preparing two more lines. “Rich and old.”

“Funny. I thought you were the one working his way into the family tree.” She looked at Doc and both smiled as they watched Merlin’s face turn bright red.

“Yes,” Doc said. “Do tell. Have you been deflowered yet?”

“Not in this lifetime,” Merlin said. “Although lately she’s becoming pretty insistent. The other night she forced my hand up her skirt. You wouldn’t believe what it…well, you two would. She says it would be the best I’ve ever had.”

“Given your situation, she’d be right,” Doc said.

“Says it would be beyond comparison.”

“Compared to what?” Maya said. “Your right hand?”

Doc and Maya laughed. Merlin turned indignant.

“Maya, you can be a real bitch.” He turned to Doc. “How do you put up with her?”

“She has her moments.”

Merlin finished two more lines and leaned back in his chair. “Nothing yet from our Mr. Barrier, huh?”

“No. He’s been way too quiet,” Doc said.

“We should have gone to watch his hockey game. Seeing his head bounced off the ice would have brought so much joy,” Merlin said. “But I have enjoyed watching the amnesia scam he’s been trying to pull off.” Merlin chuckled. “I’m sorry. Have we met before?” he said, mimicking a dazed and confused Barrier.

Doc and Maya roared at Merlin’s impression. “How about when he walked up to Maya and said, ‘Mommy?’ The look on your face was priceless.”

“It was just an excuse to nuzzle my breasts,” Maya said. “It’s sad. I almost feel sorry for the guy.
