“And a Two-Fold Damnation to You, Mrs. Child!”

Child’s fame as an abolitionist writer reached a sensational pinnacle when she published her most famous anti-slavery tract, Correspondence Between Lydia Maria Child and Gov. Wise and Mrs. Mason, of Virginia (1860). Over 300,000 copies of the pamphlet were distributed to households across the North and South.

The pamphlet documented a very public argument between Child and the Virginia governor and his wife over the issue of John Brown’s famous raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859. It underscored key arguments between the North and South over the issue of slavery, which was now reaching a boiling point.

Mrs. Mason denounced Child in her letters, declaring Child would suffer “two-fold damnation” for supporting such “offscourings of the earth” as John Brown. Child replied that the abolitionists were drawing their attacks from Southern sources, and that knowing what the laws in the slave states advocated should “inspire abhorrence in any humane heart or reflecting mind not perverted by the prejudices of education and custom.” Child appealed to a sense of reason and human moral outrage over slavery, and she certainly didn’t want to see any Southerners die over the issue of slavery.
