The killer reef off Looe Key, about twenty miles northeast of Key West, has torn open the hulls of numerous ships—the exact number may never be known. Early attempts to stop the carnage included placing daymarks on Looe Key and erecting a tall, unlighted piling atop the shoal. But vessels caught in the tricky currents near the shoal often saw these markers too late, and at night, of course, they were of no use at all. Finally, in 1878 Congress appropriated $75,000 to place a lighthouse directly over the shoal.
