I interview Stuart Ross, a Pepsi spokesperson. Ross blames sugar beet growers for the quotas that led Pepsi to switch to corn syrup a few years ago, around 1981. In the US, cane sugar costs twenty-five cents per pound; corn sweetener, twenty cents. I then interview Mark Preisinger, a spokesperson for Coca-Cola in Atlanta. Preisinger lauded the switch to corn syrup as a boon for American farmers.

“We’re a business,” Preisinger says. “Our business is to offer people who own stock in our company the highest return possible. Corn sweetener is substantially cheaper.”

The Sugar Information Bureau in Washington tells me that one hundred thousand US jobs are directly related to sugar, and that without the quotas, eighteen thousand US family farmers would be harmed.
