CHAPTER 7
Amelia awoke with a headache from crying. Even with Philip cradling her in his arms, she couldn’t stop the tears.
She loved her husband and may have lost any opportunity to have him love her in return.
Turning over she expected to see Philip but he was gone, his side of the bed, cold.
Last night she’d been ready to give up. Sorry she’d ever used her voice to make beautiful music. She hadn’t even sung in the bath since she arrived. That would change as would her fear. There was no reason for her not to sing as long as it wasn’t in public. Today she was ready to fight. For her marriage and for her child’s right to have a father, for everything that mattered.
She was not his mother, and he’d better realize that.
Amelia dressed with special care. She wore a burgundy dress with high collar around the sides and back of her neck, open in the front to a sweetheart neckline curved to just above her breasts. Only a tiny amount of cleavage showed, but it was enough to tease Philip.
She entered the dining room and then her shoulders slumped.
“You look disappointed,” said Toni. “Philip’s obviously not here. He left early this morning.”
“Do you know where he went?”
“No.” She spread jam on her toast. “Just said he needed to talk to a man.”
“Did he say about what?” Did he go see a lawyer? Has he decided to divorce me?
“No. I’m sure it’s nothing. Just business. Don’t worry so, Amelia.”
“I can’t help it. He thinks I wasn’t completely honest, but I have no intention of ever going back on the stage. I want to be married to Philip more than anything in the world.”
“I’m glad to hear that.”
Philips deep voice resonated through her, sending shivers up her spine.
She whirled and faced him as he entered the dining room. He was carrying a riding quirt and his gloves.
“I thought you went to see someone in town.”
“So I did.”
Mind racing she stalled for time. “You rode rather than take the carriage?”
He stood legs apart, slapping his gloves with one hand onto the palm of the other.
“I wanted to get there and back quickly. The horse is faster.”
“I see.”
“Do you?”
“Not really but I’m here to tell you I’m not giving you a divorce. You’ll have to throw me out and even then I won’t divorce you.”
“Who said I want a divorce?”
“I think this is my cue to leave,” said Toni as she walked quietly from the room.
“Isn’t that who you went to see? A lawyer for a divorce.”
He walked forward until he was just inches from her.
“Do you think so little of me that you believe I would go back on my vows?” His eyebrows slanted into a frown. “I don’t believe in divorce either, if you remember, our vows were for life. As far as I’m concerned they still are.”
The tension in her shoulders eased. “Then what are we doing? You believe I lied but I didn’t. I have no intentions of singing professionally again, but even if I did, who are you to say I can’t.
