In quieter moments, when not helping the Resistance or worrying about German raids, Fifi, a lively woman, would think back to the pre-war years. She kept the memory of that era alive partly by playing a record of Maurice Chevalier’s signature song “Louise” on her gramophone. Fifi had seen the French entertainer at a concert in Belgium. She apparently caught his eye, and when he sang that song, he substituted her name for Louise.

She was also keenly interested in the English spoken by the different airmen who stayed with her. She noted not just the various accents of flyers from Britain, Canada, and the United States, but also the different rhythms which they used when speaking.

To help Stacey pass the time, Fifi managed to obtain a model of a Halifax bomber for him to build. This was the aircraft he had flown on his last flight. Stacey had no idea how she found a model of a British war plane in a country occupied by German forces.
