Chapter 15
Jason hung up and rubbed his ear, which was sore from having his cell phone held against it for three hoursâ¦Three hours! Heâd never talked to anyone that long. He would have used his earbuds, but the damned things had crapped out and he hadnât replaced them yet.
Tomorrow.
No, he couldnât do that tomorrow, Ben was coming! Maybe that was something else they could doâstop at the Wooster Mall so he could pick up a new set.
He checked the time. It was a little after nine. He really did have to straighten the house, but before he started rushing around making sure his home looked perfect, he had another phone call to make.
âFred? Itâs Jason.â Because he and his twin sounded so much alike, even to family, they both made a point to announce who was on the phone.
âWell, hello, Jase. To what do I owe this pleasure?â
âCanât I just want to talk to my favorite brother-in-law?â
âIâm your only brother-in-law.â
âYeah, this is true. Okay, I do need a favor. A friend is out of work. You mentioned something about a position in maintenance opening up. Can you do something so Howe will hire him?â
âIâd like to, Jase, but someone is already slotted for that spot.â
âAlready?â
âYeah, sorry.â
Shoot. âOh well. Thanks anyway.â It was a good thing he hadnât said anything to Ben.
âDonât hang up. Your sister wants to talk to you.â
Jen must have been right beside Fred. She came over the line almost immediately. âJason? Iâm glad you called. Have you bought anything for Mom for Motherâs Day?â Before he could say yes, no, or maybe, she hurried on. âHold on a second. Iâve got Eddie on the other line.â After a moment she asked, âOkay, guys?â
âYes, Jen.â Jason and Eddie answered in unison.
âOkay, Iâve got the best idea.â
* * * *
It was an hour before Jen finally let them off the phone, and Jasonâs ear was really hurting now.
âIâll send you a check for my share of Momâs gift,â Jason told her. They were chipping in for an iPad Air and a smart keyboard for it.
Eddie said, âIâll go to the Apple Store tomorrow and pick up the iPadââ
âThe two hundred and fifty-six gigabyte one?â
âNo. Mom doesnât have that many favorites, little brother.â
âJust because you were born five minutes before me, Eddieââ
âAs soon as I get the iPadâthe one with sixty-four gigabytes,â he emphasized, âIâll set it up and load all her favorite tunes and artists into it.â
âIâll leave you seniors to handle that.â Jason knew better than to fight a losing battle. And besides, there was always next year if Mom managed to fill it up. âSee you next Sunday.â
âNot me, Jase,â his twin said. âI promised Lisa Iâd spend Motherâs Day with her and her mom. And donât worry; I already cleared it with Mom.â
Jen, whoâd been quiet while Jason and Eddie sniped at each other, spoke up. âWow, youâre really serious about her, arenât you?â
âYeah, I am.â
âWell, just remember I get to be your best man, big brother.
