MATERIALS

SUIT JACKET (WE USED A MEN’S

JACKET FOR THAT OVERSIZED LOOK)

FABRIC PAINT

GESSO (OPTIONAL)

FLAT-BRISTLED SMALL PAINTBRUSH

BEADS, LACE OR OTHER EMBELLISHMENTS (OPTIONAL)

1

CLEAN JACKET

Prepping the jacket is key: Wash or dry-clean it first, then test your fabric paint on an inconspicuous location (under the lapel, on an inside seam, etc.).

2

PREPARE FABRIC FOR PAINTING

Assess your paint. Did it soak in really fast? When dry, is the color barely visible? If so, paint a layer of clear gesso over the area you plan to paint first. Gesso is used to prep artists’ canvases; multiple thin layers are built up over time to give the canvas a smooth surface. It’s available at art supply stores and also some craft shops. You could also try spraying the surface with a light coat of clear, matte spray finish, but don’t use too much—you don’t want the jacket to feel crunchy.

3

PAINT DESIGNS

Paint your designs. We did a simple freehand flower-and-vine motif, but you can paint whatever you want. Most fabric paint comes with a nozzle tip. If you aren’t happy with the way the paint comes out, use your paintbrush to blend or spread it around. Allow the jacket to dry completely.

4

ADD EMBELLISHMENTS

Add beads, lace or any other embellishments you like. Bold vintage buttons are a nice touch. You can also hack the sleeves off to three-quarters length and hem them, or crop the bottom of the jacket for a more tailored look.
