VALENTINE’S DAY AT Brundage Mountain Resort had attracted a crowd. When Dillon had set out for the resort that morning, he hadn’t even thought about the date, but it didn’t take long to notice the heart decorations everywhere, and the abundance of couples in the lift lines, sliding forward two by two.

Which was one reason the woman in the black ski pants and silver puffy jacket stood out in the crowd. She had a good figure and wore a black helmet with blond hair curling at the nape of her neck. Their eyes met across the line and she smiled at him and for a moment he didn’t breathe. He was used to pretty women smiling at him but no one had ever stopped his breath before. Not because she was beautiful—though she was—but because it was as if she knew him, though he swore they had never met before.

He continued to watch her as the line inched forward. She had an air of separateness about her—not sadness, just something that was holding her apart from everyone else. The idea intrigued him, and he determined to try to find out more about her.

He had to do a little maneuvering to make sure he ended up on a chair with her, just a matter of letting another couple go ahead of him. He waited until the last second to slide up beside her, then waited until the lift was in the air before he turned to her and smiled. “Hi,” he said. “My name’s Dillon. It’s a gorgeous day for skiing, isn’t it?” Not the most original introduction in the world, but he didn’t want to come on too strong.

“It is.” She hesitated, then returned his smile. “I’m Rosie. I’m visiting from Chicago.”

“Nice to meet you, Rosie from Chicago. Are you here with friends?”

“I’m by myself for the moment.”

Smart woman, not revealing everything to an inquisitive stranger. “What about you?” she asked.

“I’m by myself, too.” He looked around, toward the sign on the large pink and white banner draped across the midmountain restaurant, which proclaimed Brundage Is for Lovers. “I’d forgotten what day it was when I decided to come up this morning.”

“I kind of feel like a unicorn on the ark,” she said, but her smile took the sting out of the words.

“Hey, nothing wrong with being single,” he said. He thought about adding that he was surprised someone as pretty as her was by herself, but that felt like such a line. And he had heard variations of the same often enough from his friends. As if good looks and commitment naturally went together.

“Are you from around here?” she asked.

“I live in Jasper, just north of here,” he said.

“What do you do in Jasper?”

“I’m a cop.” Better to get it out there—it would either relieve her fears that he was a serial killer shopping for his next victim or send her skiing off in the opposite direction as soon as possible. He had learned that not everyone was a fan of law enforcement.
