CHAPTER 19

INSIDE THE VEIL

Amari arched her back in a deep stretch then rolled onto her side to stare out the large picture window running the length of the wall. The countryside lay quiet, steeped in early morning shadows. A chill blew in from the open windows, and she burrowed deeper under the blankets.

Nothing had changed in her bedroom. The red oak armoire still contained her riding clothes and the gowns her mother forced her to wear on special occasions. Her journal and personal mementos cluttered the dresser while a desk and chair stood in a far corner. Plush rugs and throws layered the stone floor.

She had been home eight days but couldn’t muster much enthusiasm. Although she had enjoyed catching up with everyone, she couldn’t ignore the emptiness inside her. Her sadness stemmed from two reasons—Jaxon and her drakaina. Selena had started rebuilding the grand barrier that would lock her animal away forever. Come to find out, Mother was an expert at erecting such shields.

Even though the effects of the Trinity moon were muted inside the veil, her drakaina remained unusually strong, so Mother was having a hard time fortifying the barrier. Her beast didn’t want to be caged. Amari could relate, because she, too, didn’t want to be confined to a life within the veil.

Amari hugged her blanket and focused on the dream she kept having about her drakaina when they were infants and still connected to each other. She had loved that silly beastie who struggled to walk, just like her. Who had been inquisitive about everything, and who would wait for dawn to see the sunrise, just like her.

Also, just like her, her drakaina had been small and sickly because Amari didn’t have the strength to support another entity. So, like any responsible child shifter, she forewent so her beast could thrive. But, her selfless actions resulted in the loss of her most precious friend, locked away and ultimately forgotten, until happenstance took her on a journey to the Other Side.

She sat up and drew her legs to her belly. Amari couldn’t blame her animal for not wanting to go back into the darkness. Resting her chin on her knees, she stared at the sky. A morning glow had chased away the shadows, lighting the horizon in a yellow-orange hue. What would it feel like to fly? Although she had flown on Jaxon and Father, she imagined the wind under her own wings would be exhilarating.

With a shake of her head, she threw off the covers. Her wayward musings didn’t matter because Mother would complete the final weaves tomorrow night, trapping her drakaina forever…as long as she stayed within the veil.

She stepped to the dresser and looked into the gold-rimmed mirror. The corners of her mouth lifted. She’d opted to keep her hairdo, much to Mother’s dismay. Combing her fingers through her short locks, she padded into the bathroom to take care of essentials then moved to her armoire. Habit had her reaching for tan riding pants and a blue blouse until she spotted the green day gown.
