Jake patted Widowmaker’s nose and led the horse to the small stream that lined the west side of his property. Crusted layers of ice lined the banks where the slower-moving water had time to freeze, but the middle flowed fast and cold, and it wouldn’t freeze over again for a few more months. There weren’t a lot of trees out here, but Sandbeach Lake with its white sand, tall pines, and smooth-as-glass beauty of the water reflecting everything around it including the bright blue sky, looked like an advertisement from a travel guide. This place had been his sanctuary since he was a boy. And bringing Claire here again felt like a time warp. They’d ridden the trail dozens of times before. They’d picnicked on the sand and skinny-dipped in the freezing-cold water. Having her here almost made him forget seven years of missing her.

She climbed down out of Starlight’s saddle and walked the mare over to the water to join them. “It hasn’t changed at all.”

“No. That’s one of the reasons I love it here.” Jake couldn’t keep his eyes off her bright pink cheeks or the sparkle in her eyes. She obviously enjoyed riding, and had fond memories of their secret hideaway.

He took his time, enjoying the fresh air and the company, and looked around. A thick forest of pine covered the sloping hills leading up from the lake’s shores. Thousand-year-old limber pine grew next to bristlecone pine, lodgepole pine, and ponderosa pine. The trees were so thick he couldn’t see the chunks of rock that made up the ground anywhere but along the edges of the ridges hundreds of feet away. They were up over eight thousand feet here with the timberline clearly visible, the bare peaks of the two closest mountains hovering north and west of them like sentinels guarding their private domain. The beetle kill wasn’t bad here, with only a few dead, gray pine trees sticking out like sore thumbs in the otherwise green sea of color. Around the edges of the lake and along the trail, wildflowers and white Lady Tresses lined their path in welcome.

Lady Tresses were his mom’s favorite flower. He always thought they looked like a tall green rope that happened to sprout some white flowers. He used to pick handfuls of them and bring them home to her, where she would fuss and ruffle his hair, and put the already wilting orchids in the center of the kitchen table like they were the most beautiful things she’d ever seen. His brothers had given him hell, of course. But Jake didn’t care. He was just as tough as his brothers in his own way. He just wasn’t as fucking loud as they were, and he didn’t need to hear himself talk shit about it either.

He walked to the edge of the water and pulled a long green stem free. Its top was laden with about eight small white blooms. He lifted it to his nose to enjoy the sweet smell of vanilla and jasmine before handing it to Claire.
