Dear Bella,

Today Aunt Monica and I read a review of Eleanor’s last book, published posthumously, which means after a person dies, in case you were wondering.

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to be posthumous? I’d like to know more about how it feels, but Dog can’t tell me, and asking Eleanor would just dust her again.

I do wonder what it’s like when she’s dust, though. Do you think she’s really there in the dust, or does she go to some other passed-on place? And if she does, do you think there are other passed-on people around, like her husband, Fletcher? Or my mom?

Sometimes I think maybe the passed-on world is right here with us all the time, but most of the passed-on people are better at hiding themselves than Eleanor is with me.

Maybe my mom is right here too.

Maybe she’s been watching me the whole time.

I think about that a lot. Her watching me.

You’d think it would make me feel good, being watched over, but there are some things I think maybe I wouldn’t want her to see.

Your friend,

Callie

PS—Would you mind if I called myself Callie, just for our letters?
