Becca spent the whole night avoiding Jenna, which meant that she hadn’t caught up with Nicole. She’d introduced herself to a few of Riley’s newer friends and co-workers and had a nice chat with Lauren’s brother who she’d had as a math professor in her freshman year. Becca leaned against the bar now, waiting to get a chance to order.

When Taylor had slid into their booth at the start of the night, Becca had been thrilled, but Jenna had been so... Obnoxious. She couldn’t take the hint that Becca wasn’t interested in her, and Nicole wasn’t helping. She shouldn’t have said anything in the first place, although Becca knew she meant well. How could Nicole know that she was still so hung up on Taylor? She never even knew in the first place. Becca had only told Riley about Taylor.

“Hey.”

Becca turned to see Taylor standing beside her, her blond hair flowing across her shoulders, and Becca couldn’t stop herself from wondering what if would be like to run her fingers through her hair.

“Hi,” Becca said. “I’m really sorry about earlier, and thanks. For not leaving me with Jenna.”

Taylor smiled. “I know she was pretty forward, but she was attractive. You weren’t even a little interested?”

“No. Definitely not.” Becca finally got the bartender’s attention. “What are you having?”

“Gin and tonic.”

Becca ordered Taylor’s drink and a rum and coke for her. She’d hardly drank at all while she was in college, and she still wasn’t a big drinker, but she was starting to figure out what she liked.

“Tonight turned out alright, didn’t it?” Taylor asked while they were waiting for their drinks.

“Yeah. This is what they wanted. A low-key kind of night with just some friends and family. Hey, did your ex send you that invitation?”

“Yeah. She did.” Taylor pursed her lips.

Becca hoped she wasn’t crossing a line here. “When’s the wedding?”

“The week before Lauren and Riley’s.”

The bartender was back with their drinks. “Are you going to go?” Becca asked as she took a sip from her tumbler.

Taylor sighed. “I honestly don’t know. I just keep wondering why she would even invite me. We didn’t stay in touch. We’re not friends, but it didn’t end that badly that she’d be doing this as a... A way to rub it in or anything.”

Becca nodded. She took another drink, the ice knocking against the glass as she brought it to her lips.

“But I’m leaning towards not going,” Taylor said. “The more I’ve thought about it... I just can’t see myself going. Especially with Lauren and Riley’s wedding the following weekend.”

“Isn’t the dress fitting the weekend before?”

“Yeah. You’re right. Well, I’m definitely not going. That’s great.”

Taylor’s smile did something to Becca. Her stomach flip-flopped, and she completely forgot what she was going to say.

Lauren came over to the bar, and Becca slipped away when they started talking. She kept replaying what Taylor had said about Jenna. You weren’t even a little interested? Why would she have said that? Could Taylor tell that she still had
